TIFFIN - Karlie DiRuzza and Stephen Smith were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams, as announced on Thursday. DiRuzza's selection marks the 12th time a Heidelberg volleyball player earned this honor while Smith is the 15th Berg football player to earn the distinction. Both players will now move on to the national ballot.
DiRuzza, a health sciences major from Massillon, stepped into the primary setter role for the Student Princes this season. She has already eclipsed the 1,000 assist mark and currently ranks 8th in school history for assists in a season. DiRuzza had a season-high of 65 assists back on October 6th in a 3-2 win over Baldwin Wallace. That marked the most assists in a match for a Heidelberg volleyball player since Morgan Magers in 2007. Magers went on to be named an Academic All-Acmerican in 2009.
Smith, a music and organ performance major, has been the starting placekicker for the Berg each of the past two seasons while also starting as the punter each of the last three years. This year, he has converted six field goals while also going 32-for-35 on PAT attempts.
To be selected Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with at least a 3.30 grade point average. CoSIDA members within a district vote for the Academic All-District teams with members of the CoSIDA Academic All-American committee voting on the national ballot.
The announcement by CoSIDA comes two days before Heidelberg re-dedicates the Adams Academic All-American Plaza. Made possible through a generous gift from John Q. and Patricia Adams, the plaza outside of Hoernemann Stadium honors the university's CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
