Men's & women's LAX prepare for year two

Despite a snowy February, season two for the Heidelberg University men's and women's lacrosse teams are in the offing. Both teams have returned a wealth of talent as well as adding a mix of key freshmen and transfers who will help carry the teams to success in 2018.

On the men's side, captains Max Rennillo, Chris Storrs, and Matt Wernerspach will guide the team this spring. Rennillo, a senior goalie, will anchor the defense with Storrs -- a returning starting defenseman and 2017 All-OAC selection.

Wernerspach served as the team's leading point scorer in 2017, netting 30 goals and tallying 10 assists. The senior scored the game-winning goal in the program's first ever victory last season -- an 11-10 double overtime win at Monmouth (Ill.). Leading face off man Noah Messerall is back for his senior year in the midfield.

The 2018 season kicks off with a home contest against Bethany College on Feb. 24. The Student Princes nearly earned the victory in its first contest against the Bison last season, falling in overtime. HU hosts Otterbein to commence Ohio Athletic Conference play on Mar. 24.

On the women's side, junior Dana Dudley and sophomore Anna Winnicki return in the midfield for the Student Princes this season. In 2017, the duo combined for 34 goals and 71 ground balls.

Freshmen Jessica Ballow and Mandi Phillips will compete for time between the pipes this season to lead the charge defensively for Heidelberg.

For prospective women's lacrosse student-athletes, Heidelberg will host three preview days. The games include a Mar. 17 game against Earlham, Mar. 30 against Muskingum, and Apr. 14 when the team plays host to Wilmington. Student-athletes wishing to attend any of these matches can register here.

The Berg opens its season on Feb. 25 with a home contest against Concordia (MI). Conference action starts Mar. 24 at Otterbein University.

The teams will host a double header on Saturday, Mar. 17. The men's first face off against Trine is set for 1 p.m., with the women to follow with the Earlham match at 4 p.m.
