New faces arrive on campus

TIFFIN -- Each summer, the Heidelberg Athletics staff welcomes new coaches and staff members to the campus community, including a few familiar faces.  This story will be continually updated throughout the summer as new individuals join the team.  

TENNIS & MEN'S BASKETBALL:  Corey Harvey has been named the head coach of the Heidelberg University men's & women's tennis programs and assistant coach for the men's basketball program.  Harvey comes to The Berg after completing an internship in player development with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.  

"We are excited to bring someone with Corey's experience on board," said head men's basketball coach Andy Bucheit.  "I think he will help both programs (tennis and basketball) achieve excellence in the classroom and on the court."

Prior to his year stint with the Mavericks, Harvey taught math and coached basketball at Saint John's Jesuit High School in Toledo.  There, he served as head JV coach and assistant varsity coach for the Titans.

"I am pleased that [athletic director] Matt Palm and Andy Bucheit saw me as a good fit for Heidelberg," said Harvey, a native of Hilliard, Ohio.  "I am excited to work with the tennis and basketball teams."

In addition to his prowess on the basketball court, Harvey -- a graduate of Lourdes University -- was a two-time OHSAA Division I state qualifier in tennis at Hilliard Davidson High School.  

Harvey's tenure will officially begin on August 6.  

 

MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS: Joining first year head coach, Corey Harvey, on the tennis court this year will be graduate assistant, Elias Fernandez, who is a 2018 graduate of William Woods University.

Fernandez was a standout for the Owls helping the team to two conference championships and their highest national ranking, reaching the NAIA #7 level. He was also a NAIA Scholar Athlete award recipient as a junior and senior. 

In his native country of Argentina, Fernandez was ranked second in his region and was 35th overall for his age nationally. He was also honored with the Sportsman of the Year and Federal Award Chilecito on two occasions. Prior to joining coach Harvey's staff, Fernandez served as the Head of Tennis programs at Camp Lindenmere.

Originally from Chilecito, La Riojla in Argenitina, Fernandez currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio and will be pursuing his master's degree at the Berg. 

 

ATHLETIC MARKETING & INFORMATION: Joining Jeff Garvin's sports information office as a graduate assistant is Nick Astalos. A native of Bainbridge Township, Ohio, Astalos attended Malone University and played soccer for the Pioneers. He served as team captain as a senior and was named to All-GLIAC honors as a junior. 

Prior to Heidelberg, Astalos worked with the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) and the Cleveland Browns (NFL). He currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio and is pursuing a master's degree in business administration.

 

 

MEN'S LACROSSE:  The men's lacrosse team has a new graduate assistant, Sam Kuhn.  Kuhn graduated from the College of Wooster in 2018 where was a 4 year letter winner. 

At Wooster, he played midfield and was a major contributor all four years.  Kuhn was a two-time All-NCAC selection, garnering first team all-conference and all-region honors as a senior.

He is a resident of Towson, Maryland, where he attended Loyola Blakefield High School, playing soccer and lacrosse for the national power. He has a younger brother who is currently playing lacrosse at the College of Wooster.

Kuhn, under the direction of head coach Bill Schmoldt, has spent much of the summer on the recruiting trail.   

 

SOFTBALL:  Renee Lovett, a 2018 'Berg graduate, will shift from the infield to the dugout for the 2018-19 season. Lovett -- seventh in program history in runs, hits and at bats -- replaces Mikaela Mitsch, who graduated with her master's degree in May.

Lovett, a second baseman, was an All-OAC honorable mention in 2015, 2016 and 2018.  In 2015, she was named to the NCAA All-Cortlant Regional team as the Student Princes claimed their first-ever regional championship.  

During her four seasons, the three-time Academic All-OAC honoree helped lift the Tricolor into the OAC Tournament each year.  

 

 

Also joing head coach Kelly Williams's staff for the 2018-19 season is first-year assistant coach Mari Deppe. Deppe is a 2016 graduate of Grand Valley State University, where she was a three-time All-GLIAC Academic honoree. She played as a first-baseman and a catcher for the Lakers. 

 Prior to joining Berg, Deppe served as the graduate assistant for the 2017-18 season at the University of Indianapolis. She currently resides in her hometown of Lima, Ohio.

 

 

  

   MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Third year head coach, Brian Grime will welcome a new graduate assistant to his coaching staff in 2018-19 as Eli Kaczinski joins the Berg. He is a 2018 graduate of Wartburg College where he excelled as a member of the cross country and track teams. 

Kaczinski was a NCAA All-American in cross country and a National Qualifier in the 10K in track. He was a two-time 10K champion at the IIAC, while compiling the fourth fastest 10K time in school history. To round out his standout career, Kaczinski was an Academic All-American, All-Region and All-Conference honoree for the Knights.

Eli is a native of Delmar, Iowa and currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio. 

 

  WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Head coach Nick Spell and returning graduate assistant Emma Morris are pleased to welcome a new GA to the fold -- Jorge Salcedo.  

A native of Cali, Colombia, Salcedo comes to Heidelberg after a stint in coaching and marketing with the Global Premier Soccer organization.  

Salcedo played four years at the University of Northwestern Ohio, where he helped the Racers get to the NAIA Tournament semifinals in 2015 and quarterfinals in 2016.  

As a player for UNOH, Salcedo won two regular season and two tournament crowns in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC).   

 

 

MEN'S SOCCER: Steven Smith joins the Student Princes' coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2018.

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and playing experiences to Hidden Valley.

He played for Lucan United FC in Ireland prior to joining Heidelberg.

Smith will be pursuing a master's degree of education.

 

  

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:  Morgan Harrigan will welcome a new GA to the sidelines in 2018 as Macey Sheerer  joins the 'Berg coaching staff.

Sheerer is a native of Bucyrus, Ohio and a 2018 graduate of Bluffton University.

She is Bluffton's all-time leading scorer and was a four-time All-HCAC honoree. She was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2015. 

  

 

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE:  McKenna Polak will join Ashley Travis's coaching staff for the 2018-19 season as a graduate assistant.

Originally from Hudson, Ohio, Polak joins the Student Princes as a 2018 graduate of Roanoke College.

At Roanoke, she served as team captain and was selected as an Academic All-Conference honoree, as well as a Third-Team All-ODAC selection.

Polak comes from a coaching family as her oldest brother, Ryan, is an assistant coach at Kenyon College, and her other brother, CJ, is the graduate assistant at Muskingum University. 

 

 

 MEN'S & WOMEN'S GOLF:  Kurtis Lazur, a 2018 graduate of Heidelberg, makes the transition from player to coach for the men's and women's golf programs.

Lazur was a standout golfer for the Student Princes, earning First-Team All-OAC honors as a senior after placing ninth overall at the 2018 OAC Championships.

Kurtis will be pursuing a master's degree at Heidelberg.

 

 

 

FOOTBALL: Third-year head coach, Scott Donaldson welcomes a new set of graduate assistants to his coaching staff for the 2018 season.

Austin Fields will coach Tight Ends and Tackles this year. He hails from Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania and is a graduate of Slippery Rock University. Fields was a two year starter for The Rock and was a member of their PSAC Championship and National Quarter Finalist teams.

He currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio. 

 

 

 

Chase Venuto brings an extensive history of coaching and playing experience to the Student Princes in 2018. He will oversee the Running Backs core for the upcoming season.

Venuto is a graduate of SUNYBrockport, where he played four seasons of college football. After graduating, he headed overseas to play professional football in Italy. While in Italy, Venuto played two seasons for the TorinoGiaguri and PesaroUTA.

Prior to joining the 'Berg coaching staff, he helped guide Western New England University to a undefeated season and a NCAA Sweet 16 birth in 2016 while overseeing the Wide Receiver room. In 2017, Venuto coached the Tight Ends at Ithaca College.

Originally from Ithaca, New York, Chase currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio.

Tim Denny will head up the secondary unit for Berg in 2018. Denny has spent the last two years coaching on the gridiron; 2017-18 at Gallaudet University and 2016-17 at his alma mater of Chowan University. Also at Chowan, Denny was a three-time letter winner for the Hawks and was named to the 2013 CIAA All-Rookie team and he was the team leader in tackles in 2014. 

Denny is a native of Woodbridge, Virginia and he currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio.
