AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Two Heidelberg University student-athletes were honored with Player of the Week accolades from the Ohio Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon.
Junior Malakye Nall earned the Special Teams Player of the Week across the OAC for football after coming up huge early in the third quarter. The lineman powered through the Ohio Northern blockers and got a hand on Sean Devany's punt. The kick trickled forward for a net 15-yard punt, but the block proved to be instrumental.
The Berg used the play as part of a dominant 22-point third quarter as Jimmy Gephart connected with Maceo Matthews on the very next Heidelberg offensive play for a 36-yard touchdown. The honor, oddly enough, turned out to be the offensive lineman's first career player of the week recognition.
Senior Alyssa Riley impressed in her season opener, earning the women's basketball OAC Player of the Week honor for the first time in her career. Riley started and played 26 mins on the road at Olivet College on Friday evening. En route to a career-high 22 points, Riley had a near perfect day at the foul line, connecting on 12 of 13 free throw attempts. Along with her offensive contribution, Riley also chipped in three assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block.
Eleven of her 22 points came across the fourth quarter as Heidelberg narrowly outscored Olivet 28-26 over the final frame to claim the 81-70 victory.
