AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Heidelberg University outfielder Derek Hug has been named Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week following an exceptional start to the 2014 season.
Hug, a native of Bryan, hit .538 during Heidelberg's recent trip to Florida. The sophomore has driven in 18 runs and scored 16 times in the first 10 games of the year for the Student Princes.
"Derek was very steady throughout the entire trip," said head coach Matt Palm. "He helped us win some big games with some clutch hits.
With four triples and three doubles, Hug's slugging percentage is a team-high .821. Hug, a biology major, has stolen six bases without being caught.
Against Neumann University, Hug was 4-for-4 with five RBI and two walks.
"His athleticism has helped him get extra bases on balls hit into the gaps," said Palm. "He has been a big part of the middle of our order."
After dropping their first two games in Florida, the Student Princes reeled off eight straight wins before heading back to Ohio. Heidelberg is averaging 14.0 runs per contest with a team batting average of .369.
The Student Princes are scheduled to travel to Manchester University in Indiana for a three-game weekend series with the Spartans. If field conditions permit, game one will be Friday at 4:15 p.m. Games two and three are scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
