AUSTINTOWN – Adam Manner has been named pitcher of the week by the Ohio Athletic Conference after leading Heidelberg to a regular-season championship-clinching win over #20 Ohio Northern on Saturday. The senior was in top form, fittingly so on senior day for the Berg baseball program as they defeated the Polar Bears 8-1.
Manner allowed a leadoff walk to open game one of the doubleheader with ONU but did not allow that to set the tone. He got a ground ball for a double play and fly out which put him in a rhythm from there on out. After the first inning, he sat down the next six Polar Bear batters in a row as Heidelberg took an early lead for Manner to work with.
In the both the fourth and fifth inning, Manner was able to work out of situations with a runner in scoring position with under two outs, preserving the lead for the Berg. He finished out the game allowing just one run, stranding runners on first and third to close out the complete game victory.
Manner ended the outing going the full nine innings on 111 pitches, allowing eight hits and just one walk while striking out four.
For the year, he leads the team with an impressive 7-0 record and ranks among the leaders of the OAC with a 2.24 ERA in 64.1 innings.
The Heidelberg baseball team ended the regular season with a 29-10 record, including a 14-4 mark in conference action. They earned the right to host the upcoming conference tournament and will be the #1 seed. The tournament will begin on Thursday when the Student Princes take on the #4 seed John Carroll at 1:00 p.m. at Peaceful Valley.
