ADA, Ohio - The Heidelberg University baseball team used three home runs in game two to earn a split at Ohio Northern on Saturday. The Student Princes managed just three hits in 6-0 game one loss before three homers in game two powered the Berg to a 6-1 win to salvage the split.
Heidelberg moved to 14-19 (5-9 OAC) on the season while ONU moved to 16-15 (6-8 OAC)
Ohio Northern led 3-0 after three innings of game one. A two-out single in the second and a two-run single it the third did the damage against HU starter Adam Manner.
The Student Princes struggled to get their offense going as the game wore on. The Polar Bears added to their lead with one in the seventh and one in the eighth as the deficit for the Berg grew to six.
Heidelberg managed just three hits in the game, falling by a final score of 6-0.
Manner (3-4) took the loss after throwing seven innings, allowing four runs on eleven hits with three strikeouts.
HU struck first in game two when Derek Hug hit a three-run homer in the first, giving the Berg an early 3-0 lead.
The lead was stretched to four in the top of the second when Kyle Slovick hit his first career home run.
ONU was able to get on the board with one unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but game two starter Kyle Fluharty was able to hold the Polar Bears to just that.
Both teams went silent until the ninth inning when Adam Hershberger hit his first career homer as well, a two-run blast, giving HU a 6-1 lead late. Parker Fronk added to that lead later in the inning with an RBI single, pushing the score to 7-1 in favor of the Berg.
Fluharty (4-5) picked up the win, throwing six innings while allowing just five hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts.
Hug led the offensive outburst in game two with a 4-for-5 day with two doubles and home run and three RBI in the victory. Hershberger and Alex Manner each had multi-hit games in the win as well.
Heidelberg will return home on Tuesday, April 26th, for a non-conference game with Wittenberg. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin.
