Baseball battles to split at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Heidelberg University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Student Princes gave up a walk-off hit to fall 8-7 in game one (7 innings) before rallying in game two for a convincing 14-5 victory in a game that was shortened to six innings due to darkness.

With the split, Heidelberg moved to 16-20 on the year while OWU stands at 21-11.

Ohio Wesleyan was the first to score in game one, as a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first came around to score as the Berg trailed 1-0 after one inning.

After stranding runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings, Heidelberg finally broke through in the top of the third. An RBI double down the right field line by Parker Fronk knotted up the game at one before Evan Long gave HU a 3-1 edge with a two-run single to left. A sacrifice fly by Joe Walton stretched the lead to three with two outs, but the Berg did not stop there. A single by Alex Manner through the left side with the bases loaded drove in two more as the Student Princes batted around in the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

OWU responded in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out double scored a pair, but a good relay from Derek Hug and Kyle Slovick gunned out the runner at third to end the inning with the Berg still holding on to a 6-3 advantage.

The Student Princes ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth when the Battling Bishops led off the inning with three straight hits, scoring one to cut the HU lead down to two. A sacrifice fly later in the frame cut the lead down to one before an infield single with two outs knotted up the score at six.

With the score still tied at six heading into the top of the seventh, Heidelberg quickly placed a runner in scoring position after Long singled to open the inning and was sacrificed over to second on a bunt by Matt Psychas. With two outs, T.J. Harkness singled up the middle to score Long, regaining the lead for Heidelberg 7-6.

The Student Princes were unable to close out the game, as a free base allowed came around to score after a stolen base and a two-out hit, tying up the score at seven. After another stolen base, the Battling Bishops walked off with another RBI single as the Berg fell 8-7 in game one.

Cory Jacobs (0-1) took the loss in relief on the mound for the Student Princes.

Harkness and Long each had three hits in the defeat for Heidelberg.

Adam Manner threw one scoreless inning of relief for HU in game one, bringing his career total of innings pitched to 246.1, which is just four behind Sean Hoover (1992-96) for third all-time in Heidelberg history.

Heidelberg fell behind early in game two, as OWU took a 2-0 lead after two innings.

After HU tied up the game with a pair in the third, the Battling Bishops answered again with two more to make it a 4-2 lead for the home team.

A power explosion in the fourth inning gave the Berg the lead for good. A solo home run by Cory Jacobs to go along with a grand slam by Derek Hug highlighted a six-run inning to give the Student Princes a 8-4 edge.

The power hitting continued as the game wore on, as Evan Long homered in the fifth while Jacobs hit his second homer of the game, a three-run blast, in the sixth as Heidelberg rolled to a 14-5 win in a game shortened to six innings due to darkness.

Ben Sniezek (1-0) earned the win in relief while Josh Beacorn threw a pair of scoreless innings to wrap up the game.

Both Jacobs and Hug drove in four runs in the victory.

Heidelberg will celebrate senior day on Saturday, April 30th, when they host Otterbein for a conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin.
