ALLIANCE -- A pair of ninth-inning rallies -- one not enough, the other too many -- did not go the right way for the Heidelberg University baseball team on Sunday. Mount Union swept the Student Princes, both by a 7-6 final score. Heidelberg scored five times in the ninth, coming up a run shy in the opener. Mount Union scored twice in the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap, walking off with the sweep.

The Berg fell to 11-9 overall, 2-2 in the OAC. Mount improved to 15-4, 5-1.

GAME ONE: Mt. Union 7 Heidelberg 6

In the top of the fourth, a Cory Jacobs bouncer up the middle plated Parker Fronk to break a scoreless tie.

Mount Union chased HU starter Anthony Hajdu from the game in the fifth with three runs. Hajdu (5-1) battled through 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batter -- in what was his roughest outing of his stellar season.

The Purple Raiders scored twice in the seventh and the eighth, taking a 7-1 lead into the ninth.

The Student Princes, down six, came up just short in the ninth. The first six batters reached base safely -- Fronk was hit by a pitch, Jacobs and Kyle Slovick singled, Marc Ochoa drew a bases-loaded walk, Joey Rydzewski singled home two and Matt Psychas had an RBI infield single. After the second MTU pitching change of the inning, Evan Long reached on a fielder's choice. After Long stole second, Rydzewski scored on an RBI groundout by Darrin Shirk. With the tying run on third, Alex Manner grounded out to the pitcher to end the rally.

GAME TWO: Mt. Union 7 Heidelberg 6

Psychas started Heidelberg off on the right foot with a two-run homer in the top of the first -- a line drive to left. It was his first career blast.

Up 2-1 in the third, the Tricolor broke out for three runs in the third. Rydzewski had a one-out bunt single and stole second. He scored on a single by Psychas, who moved to second on the throw home. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Psychas scored on a sacrifice foul flyout by Long. With the bases empty, Jacobs blasted his first home run of the season just under the scoreboard.

The Student Princes tacked on another in the top of the fifth. Long doubled and scored on a bouncer up the middle by Fronk.

After allowing an unearned run in the first, game two starter Cameron Deemer settled in until the sixth. The Purple Raiders used four hits to score three times in the inning, cutting the HU lead to 6-4. Deemer went six innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.

Mount Union continued to suppress the 'Berg offense, giving their own hitters a chance to battle back. The Purple Raiders scored once in the eighth, making it 6-5. In the ninth, a three walks, a double and wild pitch gave the hosts a 7-6 win.

Zach Doran (2-2), who also worked in the first game, took the loss.

The Student Princes are set to play a pair of midweek non-conference games this week, weather permitting. HU will visit Trine University on Tuesday and will host Defiance College on Wednesday. Both games are slated for 4 p.m. starts. All season long, schedule changes can be found at and @BergAthletics on Twitter.
