DELAWARE, Ohio -- The aptly-named Evan Long went deep twice as the Heidelberg University baseball team beat Ohio Wesleyan University, 12-10. Long finished with three hits, six RBI and a walk as the Student Princes improved to 20-16 on the season.

Heidelberg got off to a quick start, plating a run in the top of the first. Joey Rydzewski led off with a single and stole second -- his 23rd swiped bag of the year. A Matt Psychas single put runners at the corners with nobody out. An error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed Rydzewski to score from third.

Ohio Wesleyan (14-22) took a slim 2-1 lead in the third. After starter Alex Simun recorded the first two outs, a walk, stolen base, and wild pitch put a runner at third. After another walk, a single scored the first OWU run of the inning. The Bishops followed with another RBI single to take the lead.

The lead was short-lived, as the Student Princes knotted the game at 2 in the fourth. Darrin Shirk reached on an error and Marc Ochoa worked a walk. After a double steal, Rydzewski delivered an RBI single through the right side to score Shirk.

Cory Jacobs gave the Berg the lead with a leadoff home run in the fifth. The blast was the senior's fourth of the season. Heidelberg tacked on another run in the inning, when Parker Fronk and Phillip Frazier hit back-to-back doubles.

Fronk laced a two-run single in the sixth, plating Adam Hershberger and Alex Manner. He finished with a career-high four hits on the afternoon.

Long's day took off with the grand slam in the seventh. HU loaded the bases on a double by Shirk and two hit batters. With one out, Long pulled the homer to the power alley in right center -- his third career grand slam.

His second blast of the day came in the ninth -- a two-run homer to left center. Three of Long's eight career home runs have come at OWU's Littick Field.

Long's homers proved critical as the Battling Bishops hammered out five runs in the ninth, including a grand slam of their own. Despite giving up the homer, Zach Doran rebounded to end the game with a strikeout and a fly out.

Simun (5-2) went a solid six innings to earn the victory. He gave up three runs on five hits and three walks. Simun struck out eight. Brady Ansara worked a scoreless inning.

DIAMOND NOTES

When the day started, Heidelberg was scheduled to travel to Trine University. The Thunder canceled because of field conditions and weather forecast. Head Coach Chad Fitzgerald eschewed another off day, opting instead for the game at OWU.

Long's multi-homer game was the second of the year for Heidelberg. Shirk went yard twice in a 4-3 loss at Manchester in March

Heidelberg hit four doubles -- the fifth time with 4+ two-baggers in 2017.
