ANGOLA, Indiana -- The Heidelberg University baseball team, behind a 3 hit 3RBI performance by Darrin Shirk, shut out the host Trine University Thunder in a non conference game on Thursday. Six Heidelberg hurlers combined on the 5-hitter, including four perfect innings at the end. With the win, Heidelberg snaps a three game losing streak, it's longest of the year.
The Berg improve to 14-6 on the season.
The Student Princes hopped out to a 5-0 nothing lead in the top of the second inning. Keaton Mark singled to right and scored on a double down the left field line by Shirk. Shirk scored on a two-out single by Joey Rydzewski After Zach Cleaver reached on an error, which plated Rydzewski, Evan Long doubled to center. Matt Psychas followed with his own double, this one to left, closing out the scoring.
In the third inning, Heidelberg plated a run on a throwing error on a double steal.
Leading 5-0 in the the fifth, Shirk hit his second home run in as many games, a solo blast to left.
Berg starter, Sam Ankrom, worked four effective innings, including striking out the side in the third.
Out of the bullpen Justin Liserio picked up his first win of the season with a scoreless fifth. Alex Sir Louis, Eric Hooper, Hunter Hensley, and Marc Ochoa sat down 12 thunder batters in a row through the sixth through the ninth period.
Pinch hitter Joe Sefik doubled in the in the ninth and scored on a Shirk single. After Shirk moved to second, he scored when Rydzewski reached on an error.
Rydzewski, Long, Psychas, and Shirk all had multi hit afternoons.
The Berg defense twisted two double plays behind Ankrom.
Heidelberg has three games on the docket for the weekend, a doubleheader at conference foe Otterbein on Saturday, and a make up game on Sunday at home against Thomas More College. Sunday's home game is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
