TIFFIN -- Playing their fourth game in three days, the Heidelberg University baseball team cruised to a 29-13 marathon win over Oberlin College on Monday afternoon. Heidelberg pounded out 27 hits, forcing the Yeomen defense to commit nine errors.
The Berg improves to 24-13 as Oberlin slips to 10-24. The 29 runs were the most for the Tricolor since a 37-2 win against Northland (3/7/14).
Evan Long had a spectacular day at the plate for the Berg, going 5 for 6 with three runs scored and 4 RBI. Joey Rydzewski, Matt Psychas, Phil Frazier, and Parker Fronk all had a three hit, multi-RBI day. Senior Joe Walton had a productive 1 for 2 afternoon with two sac flies, driving in four.
A first inning solo shot off HU starter Eric Hooper put the Yeomen ahead early, 1-0.
It didn't take long for the Student Princes to get to work, as the home team evened the score in the bottom half of the inning. Joey Rydzewski led off with a sharp single to center, and was followed by Evan Long's single through the right side. Matt Psychas reached on an error, which loaded the bases for Kyle Slovick. The senior lifted a sac fly to center, scoring Rydzewski.
After Oberlin scored one in the second, Heidelberg tacked on nine runs in the bottom half. Phil Frazier led off the inning with a walk and stole second. He came around to score when Zach Cleaver lined a single to left. With the bases loaded, Long lined a one out single to right center, plating Cleaver and Joe Walton.
After a pitching change by the visitors, OC attempted to pick Rydzewski off third, but the throw sailed over the third baseman's head, allowing Rydzewski to trot home. The Berg continued to pressure the Oberlin defense, recording five straight singles in the frame.
Psychas belted a two run home run to left in the third which ignited an eight run inning by the Student Princes. Long and Walton each had two run hits in the frame.
Heidelberg added three in the fourth before Oberlin scored three off Zach Doran. Senior Conner Pacella came in relief of Doran, inheriting a bases loaded one out jam. Pacella got the Student Princes out of the jam, inducing a weak fly out and a strikeout.
The home team scored twice in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from freshman Eric Devore.
The Yeomen cut into the Heidelberg lead in the sixth, pushing across seven runs -- three off wild pitches.
Kyle Jenkins helped the Berg extend their lead with a two run double down the left field line in the sixth. The stroke drove in Rydzewski and Long, who reached via HBP and a single. Chaz Bova lined a bases clearing single to right center, driving in Parker Fronk, Kane Bateman, and Jenkins.
The final three HU pitchers -- Kyle Psychas, Marc Ochoa, and Joey Wenning combined for three innings pitched, allowing a hit each. The trio kept OC off the board and helped the Student Princes seal the win.
Both teams combined to have 54 players enter the game, including 17 different pitchers.
This is the fourth time since 1946 the Berg has scored 29 or more runs in a game. The last time Heidelberg scored 29 runs at home was a win over Muskingum, 29-10, in the 2010 OAC Tournament.
The Berg travels to La Roche College on Wednesday for a makeup game. First pitch is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
