TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team ended the regular season with a sweep of Capital University on a picture-perfect Saturday at Peaceful Valley. With the wins, Heidelberg stayed alive in its quest for a berth in the four-team OAC Tournament.
The victories ran The Berg's streak to seven and gave head coach Chad Fitzgerald his 100th career win.
GAME ONE: BERG 5-9-1 CAP 2-4-0
Capital took a lead in the second with two unearned runs that scored on a throwing error.
Heidelberg responded quickly. With two out and two on, Rydzewski dropped an RBI single in between the shortstop and center fielder. Parker Fronk scored on the bloop.
The Student Princes grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third. Darrin Shirk was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Phil Frazier. Shirk scored on a wild pitch by Capital starter Patrick Avellano.
Up 3-2 in the sixth, The Berg added two. Joe Walton drew a two out walk and Rydzewski dropped another single in to center. Evan Long followed with a double up the alley in left center, scoring both runners.
Trevor Adkins (5-0) worked eight strong innings for the Student Princes. He limited the Crusaders to two unearned runs on three hits. He walked two and fanned five.
In the ninth, Joey Wenning earned his sixth save of the season.
GAME TWO: BERG 7-11-1 CAP 1-7-1
After twisting a nifty 6-4-3 double play in the top of the first, the Heidelberg offense got going right away. Rydzewski, Long and Psychas started with three straight singles. With the bases full, Frazier dribbled one toward third that drove in another. Fronk plated one with a sacrifice fly. Capital starter Ross Thompson then walked three straight, forcing in two additional runs. In all, Heidelberg sent 11 to the plate and scored five times.
A Slovick single in the fourth drove in Psychas, who led off with a double into the left field corner.
Up 6-1 in the seventh, The Berg added another run. Psychas pulled a single to left, scoring Joe Walton.
SENIOR DAY: Following the second game, Heidelberg honored its senior class -- Chaz Bova, Jordan Beacorn, Joey Rydzewski, Cameron Charbonneau, Phil Frazier, Joe Walton, Zach Cleaver, Joe Sefik, Sam Ankrom, Anthony Hajdu, Darrin Shirk, Kyle Slovick, Ryan Marasti and Conner Pacella. The group presented a framed picture to Fitzgerald, commemorating his 100th career win.
OAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS: Otterbein (14-4) won the regular season and will host the four-team OAC tournament. Marietta (12-6) has locked in the No. 2 seed. Heidelberg and Ohio Northern are each sitting at 11-7, awaiting the result of tomorrow's Baldwin Wallace (9-7) at John Carroll (8-8) doubleheader. If BW sweeps JCU, ONU is the No. 3 seed and BW is the No. 4 seed, with Heidelberg left out. If BW splits or gets swept, Heidelberg is the No. 3 seed and ONU is the No. 4 seed.
