INDIANAPOLIS -- A rocky start cost the Heidelberg University baseball team in its season opener. The Berg fell to Anderson University, 3-1, at Bishop Chatard High School. The Ravens scored all three of their runs in a first-inning frenzy.
On blustery day, the Student Princes (0-1) outhit Anderson (1-0) by a narrow 4-3 margin.
'Berg starter Trevor Adkins gave up a single, a homer and a run-scoring double in the first before he settled into the game. Of the three Anderson runs, only two were earned.
Down 3-0, junior Marc Ochoa connected on his first collegiate home run -- a solo blast to right to start the top of the second.
Neither Adkins (0-1) nor Anderson starter Joseph Moran (1-0) allowed another hit. Adkins departed in the fifth, finishing with five strikeouts and five walks in 4.2 innings. Moran went a full 5.0 innings, fanning eight and walking three.
As reliever Alex Sir Louis threw 3.1 innings of hitless relief, the Student Princes tried to mount a comeback at the plate.
Their best opportunity came in the top of the eighth off of Zachary Lane (Save, 1). Tyler Smith and Kyle Jenkins began the frame with singles -- to short and off the umpire, respectively. Keaton Mark followed with a single to left, but Smith was thrown out at home. Lane escaped with a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
The Student Princes will look for their first win in warmer weather -- as their next eight games will be played on their annual trip to Port Charlotte, Florida. Heidelberg's first game of the Snowbird Classic is scheduled for Mar. 1. First pitch with Mitchell College is slated for noon.
