BASE: Homers help Berg rally back for win

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida -- Home runs by Kyle Jenkins and Matt Psychas helped resurrect the Heidelberg University baseball team in a wild 13-11 triumph over Mitchell College on Friday. The Student Princes (1-1) trailed 6-0 before their first at bat, yet managed to climb out of the hole with big hits.

Kyle Jenkins had two home runs and drove in five runs on the day. He is the first Student Prince with a multi-homer game since Evan Long had two in a 12-10 win at Ohio Wesleyan on May 2, 2017.

Matt Psychas and Zach Evans each had three hits on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mitchell sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the first, scoring six times off of starter Alex Sir Louis. The Mariners used four hits, a walk, a hit by pitch and a Heidelberg error to do their damage.

Parker Fronk led off the bottom of the inning with a single through the left side. After moving to second when Jake Davis reached on an error, Fronk scored on a single to right by Zach Evans. With two outs and two on, commercial airline enthusiast Kyle Jenkins send a 2-0 fastball into flight over the wall in left center. For Jenkins, it was his first collegiate home run.

The teams traded runs in the third. Down 7-4, Matt Psychas led off with a double off the top of the wall in the left. He scored on a double play.

After the Mariners tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, Jenkins struck again. On another 2-0 pitch, he blasted his second home run of the day over the wall in left.

Down 10-7, The Berg plated a run the bottom of the sixth. Mike Warden dropped a single into centerfield and advanced to second on a high-chopper infield single by Davis. With runners on the corners, Mitchell reliever Bryce Bedard (0-1) faked a throw to third on a pickoff -- which, for the first season in the NCAA, is a balk. Warden scored on the play.

With Mitchell ahead 11-8 in the seventh, Heidelberg had a golden opportunity to change the complexion of the game. Kane Bateman laced a pinch-hit single to left center, and moved to second on an infield single by Matt Psychas. Marc Ochoa blistered a single to center to load the bases. After a pop out, Heidelberg scored on a hard-hit infield single by Warden. A bang-bang 6-4-3 double play ended the inning with HU down, 11-9

In the 8th, Evans and Tyler Smith started with back-to-back singles. With one out, Bateman roped a single to center, plating Smith. On a 1-0 pitch, Psychas unloaded -- mashing a three-run homer to left field. The homer gave Heidelberg its first lead of the day.

Mitchell put two on in the ninth before Joey Wenning sealed the win with a strikeout.

On the mound, Sir Louis went 4.2 innings in his first start of the season. He gave up 10 runs, five earned, on nine hits. Brady Knizner worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in his collegiate debut. Justin Liserio struck out two and allowed an unearned run in an inning of work. Tristan Phillips (1-0) earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Wenning walked two in the ninth before picking up the save.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Mitchell had a unique substitution in the ninth … Justin Johnson (Ellenwood, Georgia) pinch-hit for Justin Johnson (Everett, Mass.).

Warden's start for Heidelberg was his first varsity action since he played football in the 2017 season. In his first game with Heidelberg baseball, he highlighted the top of the second with a diving catch in a sinking line drive in center field.
