PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida -- For the second straight day, the Heidelberg University baseball team fell behind early. Unlike Friday's win, the Student Princes were unable to rally against No. 14 Misericordia -- falling 7-0 on the second day of play at the Snowbird Classic. The Berg drops to 1-2 on the season.
Kane Bateman had a two-hit day for the Student Princes, who managed to pound out nine hits on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars scored twice in the second and twice in the third off of 'Berg starter Trevor Adkins. Adkins (0-2) went a full three innings, walking five, hitting two, and issuing two hits.
Up 4-0, Misericordia plated three unearned runs off of freshman Ryan Keane in the fourth, opening up a 7-0 lead. In his collegiate debut, Keane threw three innings, allowing just the three unearned runs on three hits and two walks.
Mason Metz made his season debut, throwing the final three innings. He struck out five and allowed no runs and just one hit.
Despite the shutout, Heidelberg had opportunities. In the second, Marc Ochoa singled to left and moved to second when Parker Fronk reached on a catcher's interference. Mike Warden singled to left, but Ochoa was thrown out at home. The Cougars induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Student Princes stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and eighth.
Misericordia's Ian McCole (2-0) threw seven innings, tallying eight strikeouts and issuing eight hits.
Heidelberg faces Moravian College (0-1) at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the North Charlotte Regional Park.
