BASE: Trip ends with win over No. 5 Swarthmore

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida -- Facing a ranked opponent for the third consecutive day, the Heidelberg University baseball team won again, upending No. 5 Swarthmore, 10-3. Trevor Adkins rebounded from two shaky starts, throwing eight innings.

The Student Princes -- winners of six straight -- went 7-1 on the trip and stand at 7-2 overall. Swarthmore fell to 0-1.

The strong start by Adkins was bolstered by yet another persistent Heidelberg offense. Seven Heidelberg starters had multi-hit days, including a three-hit effort from Kyle Jenkins. Jenkins and Marc Ochoa each drove in three runs.

Kane Bateman led off the game with a single to right center, then moved to second on a base hit by birthday boy Matt Psychas. With two outs, Bateman scored on a base hit by Keaton Mark. Parker Fronk followed with an RBI single, giving HU a 2-0 lead.

The Student Princes tacked on two more in the second. Zach Evans drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, then went to third on a base hit by Tyler Smith. Kyle Jenkins cleared the bases with a two-run double inside the first base bag into the right field corner.

Heidelberg went back to work in the fourth inning. Jenkins and Psychas hit one out singles, then raced home on a double to left by Marc Ochoa.

Up 6-0, The Berg plated two more in the sixth. Bateman was hit by a pitch before Psychas walked. Ochoa singled to right center, plating Bateman and sending Psychas to third. Mark delivered a sacrifice fly, which put Heidelberg up 8-0.

Adkins, who had faced the minimum through five, ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth. With runners on second and third and a run in, Charles Levitt sent a high fly ball deep to right center. Mark ran a long way, but the ball kicked off the heel of his glove. The ball rolled past Bateman, who retrieved it and fired it toward the infield. Levitt never broke stride as he rounded third as Smith relayed the ball to home. The ball arrived about the same time that Levitt crashed into Ochoa, who managed to hold onto the ball amid the tangle of bodies. Two runs scored, but the out was critical as Heidelberg and Adkins escaped the frame with an 8-3 lead.

Parker Fronk drove in an insurance run in the top of the eighth, driving in Ochoa. Jenkins added a run in the ninth, singling home Smith, who had led off with a double.

Adkins (1-2) went eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three and did not allow a walk.

Justin Liserio worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Swarthmore used six pitchers on the afternoon. Starter Sawyer Lake (0-1) lasted three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Jared Gillen had a two hit day for the Garnet.

Over the past three seasons, Heidelberg has gone 18-7 in Florida.

Heidelberg is slated to return to action next weekend with a three-game set against Manchester University. The weather will not be as nice as it has been in Florida.
