TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University baseball team swept the opening weekend of conference action, walloping Ohio Northern University, 14-0 and 13-3. On a brisk, yet sunny, Saturday, the Student Princes pounded out 30 hits.

Strong starts by Trevor Adkins (7.0 IP, 0 R) and Alex Sir Louis (5 IP, 2 ER) allowed The Berg's potent offense to settle in. A total of 13 HU players had hits, and all nine starters had at least two hits.

Tyler Smith, Keaton Mark and Matt Psychas led the way with four hits apiece. Smith, Kyle Jenkins and Kane Bateman each drove in three runs.

With the wins, Heidelberg improved to 12-3 overall, 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern has dropped three straight games, and fell to 7-6 overall, 0-2.

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 14 Ohio Northern 0

What started as a pitcher's dual turned into a romp. Adkins and ONU starter Nate Bye traded scoreless frames through five innings. ONU's best opportunity came in the fifth. With the bases full and one one, Matthew Burkett sent a hard bouncer to the right side of the infield. Tyler Smith gloved the high bounce, spun and threw to second to initiate an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Smith singled to right and moved to second on a walk by Bateman. Jenkins delivered his fourth homer of the season -- a three-run shot to left center.

The runs in the sixth allowed Heidelberg to settle in offensively, Heidelberg pounded out eight runs on eight hits, taking a commanding 11-0 lead. Keaton Mark singled and moved to third on a single by Parker Fronk. Jake Davis followed with an RBI single into left center. After a bunt base hit loaded the bases, Bye (1-1) departed and James Fisher took the mound. Smith bounced a base hit through the right side, plating Fronk and Davis. With one out, Jenkins was grazed by a pitch -- ending Fisher's afternoon. Blake Lester entered and gave up a two-run single to Matt Psychas and a two-run double to Marc Ochoa. After another pitching change, HU's final run of the frame came on a Fronk sacrifice fly.

Not done, Heidelberg added three more in the bottom of the eighth. Doran scored on a wild pitch early in the frame. Later, pinch hitter Josiah Aska tallied his first collegiate hit with a two-run double over the head of the center fielder, scoring Psychas and Mike Warden.

Adkins (2-2) was sharp in his seven innings of work. He struck out a season-high 10 batters and allowed five hits. Justin Liserio and Cayden Rollins each worked an inning of scoreless relief.

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 13 Ohio Northern 3

Scoreless through three, Heidelberg broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Mark doubled to left, moved to third on a fly out, then scored on a wild pitch. With Doran on second, Smith laid down a bunt single and moved to second on an errant throw to first. On the play, Doran scampered home. Smith scored from second on a triple by Bateman. Bateman scored on a passed ball.

Game two starter Alex Sir Louis (2-1) allowed two runs in the fifth inning, but was able to limit the damage. Sir Louis went a full five innings, allowing just the two runs on seven hits.

Heidelberg responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Fronk singled through the right side, plating Psychas from second. After the departure of ONU starter Jack Schaller (2-1), reliever Sean Sweeney issued bases-loaded walks to Doran and Smith.

Ahead 7-2, the Student Princes removed all doubt with a six-run seventh. Jake Davis tripled to center and scored on a bouncer through the left side by Doran. After a walk and a pitching change, Bateman doubled home two with a shot to the wall in center. A throwing error and a triple off the wall in right center by Mark yielded two more runs for the hosts. Pinch-hitter Eric Devore singled home Mark to close the inning.

In relief of Sir Louis, Heidelberg used a bunch of Bradys. Brady Knizner worked three scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Brady Ansara allowed one run in the ninth.
