TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team lost an emotional 7-3 non-conference contest to Thomas More University on Tuesday. An eventful eighth inning boosted the visiting Saints to victory.
The Student Princes slipped to 14-6 at the midway point of the regular season. Thomas More improved to 8-10.
Freshman starter Alec Zoeller was sharp -- throwing six innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. He fanned five.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Zoeller and TMU starter Bailey Martin fired shutouts through the first 4.5 innings. In the fifth, Tyler Smith hit a two-out double to left center. He scored on a base hit to right center by Kane Bateman.
The HU lead was short-lived. TMU plated an unearned run in the top of the sixth.
In the hectic eighth inning, Thomas More took control with a five-run outburst. The visitors hammered out six hits off of relievers Justin Liserio (0-1) and Joey Wenning to do the damage in the frame. Mid-inning specialist Mason Metz allowed one hit but avoided more damage by inducing a 6-4-3 double play.
The Saints added an insurance run in the ninth, taking a 7-2 lead.
The Berg tried to rally in the ninth. Kyle Jenkins and Zach Doran were hit by pitches before Bateman doubled to right center. The hit drove in Jenkins, but Heidelberg would strand the pair in scoring position.
Reliever Jonathan Breeden (2-2) nabbed the win for TMU.
