TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team got back to winning ways at home on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University by a final score of 6-2.

The Berg (23-10) got on the board early in the bottom of the first. Kane Bateman led off with a single and advanced to second on a balk. Then, Kyle Jenkins singled to right field and advanced to second on the throw attempt. With Jenkins and Bateman in scoring position, Matt Psychas and Marc Ochoa tallied back-to-back RBI groundouts, taking a two-run lead.

In the top of the fourth, OWU (12-19) got one back to cut into the deficit. CJ Colson led off with a triple off the wall in left center. Colson then scored after Davis Graham reached on an error.

Heidelberg responded swiftly in the bottom half of the fourth. Parker Fronk led off the inning with a solo home run that clanked off the scoreboard in right field -- his second blast of the season. The Berg then chased the OWU starter from the game after Eric Devore followed up with a hit-by-pitch and Tyler Smith blooped a single to left field that put two on with no outs.

As the inning continued, Zach Doran and Mike Warden drew back-to-back walks that brought in another run before a soft liner to left dropped in for Bateman that scored Smith from third. Keeping the inning going, Psychas was hit by a pitch as Doran trotted home to complete the damage in the inning.

OWU fought back in the top of the sixth as they scored another run, this time on a sacrifice fly. Colson once again led off with an extra base hit on a double and came around to score on back-to-back flyouts. The run proved to be consolation as the 'Berg's bullpen kept the Battling Bishops off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Heidelberg starter Tristan Phillips (5-0) worked the first six innings and scattered four hits, two runs and a walk for a solid outing. Mason Metz came on for a 1-2-3 seventh and a scoreless eighth. The reigning OAC pitcher of the week, Joey Wenning then came on for the ninth. Wenning then worked three outs around a walk to cap the win.

Kane Bateman led all hitters with three hits on the day. Kyle Jenkins and Tyler Smith each had two hits a piece to balance the Berg's offense.

Charlie Neel (1-2) was hit with the loss for OWU as he was responsible for the six Heidelberg runs. Colson's two hits led the Battling Bishops. Reliever Jackson Brownstein threw well, holding The Berg scoreless over four innings of work.

Tuesday's game was the first time in the past five meetings between Heidelberg and Ohio Wesleyan where neither team scored 10 or more runs.

A tough test awaits the Student Princes as they visit No. 9 Denison University tomorrow, April 24th for a 5 p.m. single game. The start time in Granville has been pushed back one hour from the originally scheduled 4 p.m.
