TIFFIN - Quarterback Michael Mees has been named OAC offensive player of the week following his explosive performance in the Bendo Bowl against Ohio Northern. The senior from North Ridgeville, Ohio, finished the game with six total touchdowns, leading Heidelberg to a school-record 729 yards of total offense, breaking the previous record of 696 that was set in the 72-7 victory over Alma in week one. This marks Mees' 3rd time being recognized with this award, receiving it for his efforts in wins over Ohio Northern and Marietta in 2013.
Mees started off strong against the Polar Bears, throwing for three touchdowns in the first half, including two to standout receiver Donteea Dye. The senior quarterback capped off his performance in the 4th quarter when he connected with his brother, James Mees, twice for touchdowns, as well as finding an opening in the ONU defense and sprinting 59 yards for a touchdown to put away the ball game with under two minutes to play.
He finished the afternoon going 24-32 passing for five touchdowns and no interceptions. Mees also had an impressive day on the ground, running seven times for a career-high 116 yards and one score.
Mees and the rest of the Heidelberg football team will take to the road this week to face Otterbein University in a battle for the Rhine River Cup. That rivalry game is scheduled to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. in Westerville.
