TIFFIN - Ben Poirier has been named to the D3football.com team of the week following his dominating performance on the defensive line against Baldwin Wallace. The senior wrapped up his Heidelberg career on a high note, tying for the team-high in tackles with 11 and sacks with 2.5, while leading the team with three tackles for loss. This is the second time he has receieved this honor, also being selected in week five of the 2012 season.
The 11 tackles by Poirier was a new career-high, breaking his previous mark of eight, which he recorded in 2012 against Marietta. Of those 11 tackles, eight of them were solo. He found his way into the Yellow Jacket backfield throughout the game, getting to the quarterback for 2.5 sacks while also pressuring the visiting QB into an interception. Poirier played a big role in a Berg defense that had a total of 10 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and gave up just seven BW points until late in the fourth quarter when the Student Princes held a commanding lead.
Heidelberg defeated Baldwin Wallce 52-20 in the game, ending their 2014 season with an 8-2 overall record, including a 7-2 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The win sent Poirier and the rest of his class out with a 33-8 record over their four years on campus, giving them the most wins by a senior class in Heidelberg football history.
