Men's Basketball opens with 72-59 win

CINCINNATI – The Bucheit era starts with a win.

Heidelberg University men's basketball defeated Transylvania, 72-59, in the debut of first-year head coach Andy Bucheit.

Keith Mackie scored a game-high 16 points and Jackson Blue had a double-double to propel the Student Princes to the victory at the Mt. St. Joseph Tip-off Tournament.

After a tight first 10 minutes, the Student Princes went on a 13-5 run, keyed by seven points by reserve Cole Williams. The Berg held a nine-point lead at halftime.

Newcomer Marcquice Taylor scored the first 11 points of the second half, hitting three 3-pointers and making a lay-up off of a steal by Lee Renner. Mackie assisted on each of Taylor's 3-pointers.

With a 20-point lead, the Tricolor was able to cruise to victory.

"Our team had a great understanding of our system tonight," said Bucheit.  "It was a collective effort by everyone to get the win."

Mackie had eight assists and six rebounds to go along with the 16 points. Blue had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"Our energy, focus and aggressive nature took over the basketball game," said Bucheit.

The Student Princes return to action on Sunday. They will battle tournament host Mt. St. Joseph at 1 p.m.
