TIFFIN, Ohio – The Heidelberg University men's basketball team battle the Capital Crusaders in midweek OAC action. Despite leading at halftime, the Berg fell to the he Crusaders, 72-67.
The Student Princes swapped the lead with Capital in the opening minutes of the first half. A burst from the Berg's offense in the closing three minutes of the first half gave the Student Princes a 36-31 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Student Princes extended their lead to 13 points in the first five minutes of the second half and seemed to be heading towards their second OAC victory. However, the Crusaders found a handful of fast break points and layups in transition to pull the game to a tie at the 6:40 mark.
The Berg exchanged the lead with Capital a few more times in the next 0:40 until the Crusaders gained a one-point advantage with 6:00 remaining. The Berg men could not find the points down the stretch to outlast the Crusaders as Capital hit a collection of clutch free throws in the final minutes.
Tiffin native, junior Cole Williams led the Student Princes offensively with an 18-point performance. Behind Williams, seniors Keith Mackie and Mike Petrie, along with sophomore transfer Deonte Holder finished with 13 each.
Sophomore Jackson Blue continues to lead the Berg men on the glass as he hauled in a team-high seven rebounds to accompany his nine points.
Capital's big man, Ben Jackson led all scorers with 20 points as he shot eight of nine from the field and a perfect four of four from the line. Crusader guard, Andrew Bolka finished with a double-double, 13-points, 11 rebounds against the Berg men.
Heidelberg men's basketball will return to the court on Saturday, February 1, when they travel to Wilmington College. Tipoff between the Quakers and the Student Princes is slated for 3:00 p.m.
