Men's basketball loses to John Carroll

TIFFIN, Ohio—After losing to John Carroll University in double overtime early January, the Heidelberg Men's basketball team entered Thursday night's game with hopes of revenge. However, a string of missed opportunities resulted in a 76-70 loss for the Student Princes.

Heidelberg (5-14, 1-11 OAC) was led by sophomore Deonte Holder's 17 points and five rebounds. Juniors Cole Williams and Frank Longhino followed Holder with 14 and 12 points respectively. Williams snatched a team-high eight rebounds for the 'Berg.

John Carroll (13-7, 7-6 OAC) got on the board early, scoring a layup off the starting tip. The Student Princes settled into the flow of the contest and took a 15-10 lead.

The HU advantage quickly disappeared with a sequence of John Carroll 3-pointers and Heidelberg turnovers. The Blue Streaks led by as many as nine points in the opening half.

With a minute to go in the first, Heidelberg closed the gap to two with a 3-pointer by Longhino, resulting in a 39-37 halftime score.

Five minutes into the second half, Heidelberg came close to stealing back the lead with a steal by Keith Mackie and a 3-point shot by Holder, tying the game 45-45.

With four turnovers and 11 missed shots by HU, John Carroll went for a 27-12 run, giving the visitors a 15-point lead with four minutes left.

The Student Princes were able to whittle the deficit down to six, but would not get any closer.

"This loss is over, now we got to move on," said Bucheit. "If we remain positive and stay enthusiastic , good things will happen. If we make it into the OAC tournament, we will be dangerous."

Thanks to ferocious winter weather, the game against John Carroll was the first game of four in a seven day span for Bucheit's crew.

Heidelberg will return to OAC action against Marietta College this Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
