Olivet drops men's basketball

OLIVET, Mich. -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team could not recover from an early deficit as they fell to Olivet College 97-79 on Saturday. The Student Princes slip to 2-2 while the Comets move to 2-2.

Junior Kiere Bennie led HU with 23 points and seven steals. Mike Mason added 13 points.

Olivet opened the game with a commanding 29-6 lead, aided by seven 3-pointers. Junior Michael Schuller temporarily stopped the momentum with a shot from behind the arc. The Comets responded right away with their eighth three of the half.

The Comets would go on to make five more 3-pointers before the end of the half, giving them a 54-33 lead at the break.

Midway through the second half, Heidelberg would put together a small run to chip away at the Olivet lead. Threes by Shane Lee and DeAvery Collins combined with layups from Schuller and Bennie cut the Comet lead to 13 with 10 minutes to play.

Olivet used free throws and 3-pointers to distance themselves from the Berg. HU could not put together any momentum for the remainder of the second half.

The Student Princes took one free throw in the game.

HU shot 27% from beyond the arc compared to Olivet's 61%.

Heidelberg will return to Tiffin for their home opener on Nov. 30. Tipoff against Trine University is slated for 7 p.m.
