Men's basketball picks up non-conference win

TIFFIN -- Aided by 36 points from their bench, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team defeated Adrian College 82-78 Wednesday night. The HU bench outscored Adrian's 36-4 -- including 22-0 in the first half.

Junior Kiere Bennie paced Heidelberg with 16 points. Mike Mason recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Michael Schuller added 12 points for the Tricolor -- going 4-7 from beyond the arc.

Myron Prewitt added 11 points for the Tricolor. Junior Chris Moxley and freshman Alex Arellano chipped in with 10 points each.

The Berg improves to 6-3 while the Bulldogs slip to 3-4.

Adrian opened the game on a 10-2 run. Heidelberg used a nine-point swing to take an 11-10 lead. A 3-pointer from Schuller, layups from Mason, and a layup by Arellano pushed the Student Princes ahead with 13:28 remaining.

The Bulldogs responded at the other end to stop the HU run. Schuller responded with another three to give the home team the lead again.

With 5:43 until halftime, Bennie's three pushed the Heidelberg lead to 27-22. Adrian answered with a small run, capped off by a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired from Davonte Harris for a 28-27 lead. The Bulldog lead was short-lived, as Schuller hit his third triple of the half giving the Tricolor a two-point advantage.

Knotted at 34, a Moxley jumper gave the Student Princes a 36-34 lead heading into the break.

Arellano pushed the Student Princes ahead for good with 14:46 remaining. The freshman hit a jumper, before the Heidelberg defense forced a turnover courtesy of their full court press. Arellano made a layup on the possession, giving HU a 48-44 lead.

HU tacked onto their lead with a Bennie jump shot and finger roll and a Mike Mason free throw. The 12-2 run was capped off by a Bennie 3-pointer from the corner.

Schuller drained a three from the wing with under ten minutes to play to give the home team their first double-digit lead of the game at 64-54.

An electrifying Prewitt dunk and a Moxley three moved Heidelberg ahead 74-64 with under five minutes to play.

Heidelberg led by as many as eight with under a minute to play. A 6-0 run by the Bulldogs cut the HU lead to 80-78 with 12 seconds left. Moxley sank a pair of free throws with 10 seconds on the clock to give the Student Princes their final points.

Harris led the scrappy Bulldogs with 22 points. Daton Aaron added 19 points for Adrian while Isiah Crofford scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds.


Six players in double figures is a season high for Heidelberg.

Schuller's four 3-pointers set a new career high for the junior.

The Student Princes swatted away seven Adrian shots.

Head coach Andy Bucheit on the win: "Adrian is a very good team and they have some really talented players ... I thought our guys did a good job of wearing them down ... It's a tough week with finals and I'm proud of our guys for battling through such a demanding week and getting this win."

Bucheit on the impact of the bench: "I thought our bench guys brought us a lot of energy ... Arellano had some really good minutes and Schuller made some big shots to give us some life in the first half."


The Student Princes will host Mount Union (6-2, 2-1 OAC) for an OAC matchup on Saturday. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
