Men's basketball topples Mount in OT

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Trailing by 10 points with seven minutes to play, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team rallied and defeated Mount Union in overtime, 97-94, on Saturday afternoon. The Student Princes dominated play in the paint, outscoring Mount 48-26.

Heidelberg improves to 10-13, 6-10 in the OAC. MTU slips to 13-10, 8-8.

Junior Kiere Bennie scored a game-high 28 points in the win, including 9-10 from the line. Myron Prewitt recorded his third career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Chris Moxley and Andrew Grothouse also reached double figures -- 15 and 13, respectively.  

A triple from Bennie pulled the Berg to within two points with 3:39 remaining. The home team responded right away with a 3-pointer by Andrew Francesconi to give themselves a 77-72 advantage.

Heidelberg went on a 7-2 run, sparked by a three by freshman Malik Quisenberry. After a MTU layup, a Grothouse layup and a pair of Prewitt free throws knotted the game at 79.

Bennie gave the Tricolor an 81-79 lead with a pair of free throws with five seconds to play. MTU's Nathan Bower-Malone sent the game into overtime with a layup at the buzzer.

Heidelberg took a 93-89 lead with just over a minute remaining in overtime, courtesy of layups from Moxley and Bennie. The Student Princes built their lead to six points with 22 seconds in the extra frame.

DeAllen Jackson scored five straight points for the Purple Raiders in a five second span to cut the HU lead to 96-94 with 13 seconds left in overtime. Bennie split a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to build the lead back to 97-94.

Mount Union missed two three-point attempts in the waning seconds to seal the victory for HU.

Neither team could find momentum in the first half, as the largest lead held was at four points. After a back-and-forth first half, the Student Princes took a slim 38-37 lead into halftime.

Back-to-back threes by Francesconi gave the Purple Raiders a 62-53 advantage with 8:02 left in regulation. The big MTU lead setup the Heidelberg run late in the game, forcing extra minutes.


Heidelberg dominated the game on the glass, out-rebounding the Purple Raiders 52-28. The Student Princes scored 29 second chance points compared to MTU's nine.

There were 11 ties and 18 lead changes in the game.

"We faced some adversity today and our young group really battled for this win," said head coach Andy Bucheit. "We are so proud of them."


The Student Princes return to their home court on Wednesday evening for a matchup with John Carroll (16-6, 13-3). Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
