ANGOLA, Indiana -- Freshman Phariz Watkins scored 22 points off the bench in his collegiate debut to help the Heidelberg University men's basketball team handily defeat Trine University, 86-69. With the win, the Student Princes improve to 2-2 while the Thunder slips to 1-4.
Watkins ended his day going 8 of 10 from the floor, including a perfect 3 for 3 from deep -- all done within 22 minutes of action.
Sophomore Alex Arellano turned in a career-high 19 points off the bench.
Arellano drained a three from the top of the arc to give the visitors a slim 7-5 lead. He followed it up with a jumper the next possession. Watkins then added to the Heidelberg lead, hitting a triple to extend the lead to 12-7 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Costly turnovers kept the Thunder close, who ultimately cut the deficit to one point. Heidelberg held a 43-38 lead heading into the break.
With eight minutes remaining in the contest and a 64-61 HU lead, the Berg rattled off an 18-1 run, highlighted by five 3-pointers. Two of the five came off the hand of Arellano, while Hanley, Prewitt, and Watkins nailed the others.
Heidelberg dominated the game in the paint, outscoring Trine, 46-26.
"A lot of numbers we called tonight," said head coach Andyu Bucheit. "A lot of guys stepped up in big ways for the team to secure a win in a tough environment."
The Berg commences OAC play on Saturday afternoon. Heidelberg will host Otterbein (0-6, 0-1 OAC) for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
