MBB can't keep pace with hot-shooting Yellow Jackets

TIFFIN -- Despite having three players with 20-plus points, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team was unable to hang on to an early lead in a 92-86 loss to Baldwin Wallace on Thursday. The Student Princes led 30-15 before the Yellow Jackets got hot from beyond the arc to storm back.

Heidelberg dropped to 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. BW, which fell out of the D3hoops.com Top 25 last week, improved to 5-2, 2-1.

Kiere Bennie had 24 points while Myron Prewitt and Phariz Watkins each added 20 points in the loss.

The Berg used seven BW turnovers to help amass the 30-15 lead with 7:03 to play in the first half. A 3-pointer by Luke Schaefer set off a stretch where the visitors scored on seven straight possessions, including six 3-pointers. It closed the gap to one with 2:24 left in the period.

At half, Heidelberg held a 42-38 lead.

Down 46-40 early in the second, BW went on an 11-2 run to take a 51-48 lead. Moments later, a technical foul on the BW bench gave HU a chance to tie the game, but a missed free throw and a missed layup by Heidelberg ignited a 10-3 BW blitz.

Again, HU whittled the BW advantage down to two at 74-72 with 5:26 remaining. In less than a minute, the visitors off exploded for eight points to take a 10-point lead. From there, the Yellow Jackets never led by less than five points.

During the first 13 minutes of the game, BW was 2 of 6 from long range...afterwards, they were 13 of 19. BW, which had four in double figures, was led by a 32-point effort by Cam Kuhn.

"I thought we were a couple plays away from really taking the game over," said Heidelberg head coach Andy Bucheit. "Credit BW … they made plays and we didn't."

Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, at Mount Union (6-2. 2-1). Tipoff in Alliance is scheduled for 2 p.m.
