Late surge sinks men's basketball

ALLIANCE -- Myron Prewitt's sixth career double-double wasn't enough to push the Heidelberg University men's basketball team past the University of Mount Union. An 11-point run by MTU in the second half helped the Purple Raiders pull away, 75-63.

Heidelberg has dropped two straight and sits at 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the OAC. Mount Union moved to 7-2, 3-1.

Freshman Phariz Watkins added 12 points off the bench for the Berg. Point guard Chris Moxley dropped in 11 points, including 3 of 5 from deep.

Similarly to Thursday's loss to Baldwin Wallace, the Student Princes watched as an early double-digit lead quickly evaporated. A 20-10 advantage turned into a 23-22 deficit in span of 3.5 minutes.

The Berg pushed their lead back to eight with 5:10 to play before the hosts closed the period on a 10-4 run.

The key stretch for Mount began after a Prewitt trey put HU up 50-48 with 10:05 to play. Two free throws, three layups and a triple put the Purple Raiders ahead 59-50 with 7:16 left. MTU never looked back.

Heidelberg struggled to contain JJ Kukura, who poured in a game-high 35 points.

Prewitt finished with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Heidelberg has one more game before Christmas -- a rare midweek matinee. HU hosts WIttenberg (8-0) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
