TIFFIN -- It was fast, it was frantic, it was physical. And in the end, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team wound up on the short end of a 100-94 contest against John Carroll University. The Berg had four players in double figures, but was unable to contain the high-powered Blue Streak offense.
Heidelberg dropped to 6-6 on the season, 2-3 in the OAC. John Carroll, which received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, improved to 10-2, 4-1.
James Hanley had a team-high 19 points and picked up eight rebounds -- six of which came on the offensive end. Kiere Bennie and Chris Moxley each tallied 17 points, while Myron Prewitt added 11. Bennie had a season-high nine boards.
Heidelberg started hot, getting out to a 10-1 lead over the first three minutes. The nine-point margin was their largest of the day. JCU drew closer with their second unit on the floor, led by an outstanding effort from Matthew Csuhran. In the first period, Csuhran scored six of his 14 first-half points from the line as JCU went into halftime with a 48-44 lead.
The Blue Streaks methodically marched out to a 20-point lead with a 24-8 run over the first seven minutes of the second half.
Undeterred, Bennie and company answered with an 21-4 spurt that brought them to with 76-73. Heidelberg, however, would get no closer. John Carroll maintained a cushion, hitting key shots whenever HU would threaten.
Csuhran poured in 30 points off the bench while Antonio Vuyancih added 22 points. The Blue Streak reserves outscored Heidelberg's bench, 59-28.
Heidelberg is back in action on Saturday, at home against Muskingum University (5-7, 3-2 OAC). Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
