MBB allows Muskies to wriggle off the hook

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team was unable to sustain early momentum as Muskingum University sent the Student Princes to their second straight loss -- 90-83 on Saturday. HU enjoyed an early 10-point lead before the Muskies regrouped.

Heidelberg sank to 6-7 overall, 2-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference after starting 2-0. The Muskies improved to 6-7, 4-2.

Myron Prewitt had a complete game for the Student Princes with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. It was the junior's seventh career double-double.

Prince Benson added 12 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Freshman Davey Hipp scored 10 points off the bench.

A Phariz Watkins layup with 13:33 left in the first game put HU ahead 12-2. After the Muskies used a 15-5 run to tie the contest, The Berg was able to rebuild a modest five-point lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by MU's Tyler Bardall and Jayson Peoples gave the visitors their first lead of the game with less than five minutes left in the half. Muskingum went into the locker room with a 39-38 lead.

Despite a strong defensive effort, Heidelberg struggled to contain Marcus Dempsey. Dempsey hit several contested jumpers late in the shot clock to open up the Muskie offense. With the score knotted at 64, the visitors peeled off an 8-0 run in the span of 1:19, building a lead that they would not relinquish.

The Muskies shot well throughout the contest, shooting 53% from the floor and 56% from three. Heidelberg couldn't find rhythm from beyond the arc, shooting just 23%. The Berg won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the guests 43-33 -- including a 15-6 edge on the offensive end.

Dempsey -- the OAC's leading scorer -- led all scorers with 29 points. Devon Peart added 22 points.

The Berg travels to Capital University (6-7, 2-4 OAC) on Wednesday evening. Tip off in Bexley is slated for 7 p.m.
