Men's hoops falls short at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Prince Benson's career-high 16 points was not enough to push the Heidelberg University men's basketball team past Capital University on Wednesday evening. The Student Princes dropped their third straight conference game, 85-75.

Myron Prewitt scored 16 points in the losing effort, while Kiere Bennie poured in 15. Prewitt was a perfect 7 for 7 from the foul line.

Benson's layup five minutes into the game gave the Berg a small 8-7 lead -- the last lead they would hold for the contest. Over the next four minutes, Capital would go on a 12-3 run to distance themselves from the visitors.
Heidelberg trailed by as little as three points, but Capital continuously answered, taking a 43-34 lead into the half.

Capital led by as many as 15 points early in the second half. The Student Princes used a small run to cut the deficit back to single digits -- highlighted by a triple from Bennie -- a senior captain. Heidelberg trailed 61-55 with eight minutes to play following Bennie's trey.

Following Bennie's three, Capital went on a 9-0 run, bringing the lead back to 15 points.

A flurry of Student Prince steals and made free throws in the final two minutes helped bring the deficit back to single digits, but it was too late for Heidelberg to successfully complete the comeback.
Four Capital players finished the game in double figures, led by Caleb Cox's 18 points.

HU falls to 6-8, 2-5 in conference place as the Crusaders improve to 7-7, 3-4.

Heidelberg returns home on Saturday afternoon for their annual Alumni Day. The men will play the back end of a doubleheader with the women's team. Tip off for the men's contest against Marietta is slated for 3 p.m.
