MBB fades late in loss to No. 19 Marietta

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team is still in search of its first win in 2018 after a 75-62 setback to No. 19 Marietta College on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers outscored the Student Princes 21-7 in the final five minutes of the game to secure the victory.

At halftime, Heidelberg welcomed back many of the players and coaches from the 2007-2008 OAC Tournament Championship team. The celebration came as part of Basketball Alumni Day for both the women's and men's team.

Kiere Bennie had a team-high 16 points for Heidelberg, which fell to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the OAC. Prince Benson had 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Marietta (12-3, 6-2) stormed out to an 16-6 lead, with HU's only points coming off of a pair of Bailey Croft 3-pointers. Bennie scored 14 of his 16 points in the final 11 minutes of the first half as Heidelberg battled back. Jimmy Hanley hit a 3-pointer that gave HU a 22-21 lead with 6:03 to play in the period.

Tied at 30 at halftime, the contest remained tight throughout much of the second half. With under six to play, Benson scored five straight points for the Tricolor, turning a 54-50 deficit into a 55-54 lead. The momentum was short-lived, as Marietta's Avery Williams converted a three-point play that ignited the 21-7 run to end the game.

Williams led the way for the Pioneers, who had four players in double figures. He finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.

In his first collegiate start, Davey Hipp picked up eight points.

Heidelberg ends the first half of the OAC slate on the road at Ohio Northern on Wednesday. The Berg and the Bears will battle at 7 p.m.
