Prewitt's late three helps MBB win on the road

ADA, Ohio -- Myron Prewitt's clutch 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining sent the Heidelberg University men's basketball team home with an 84-80 win at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday evening. After dropping four straight to start 2018, the Student Princes got the win they desperately needed on the road.

Prewitt finished the evening with 13 points and nine rebounds. Seniors Kiere Bennie and Chris Moxley had 17 and 15 points, respectively. Junior Prince Benson added a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest.

"Our men played with excitement and energy tonight," said head coach Andy Bucheit. "We competed for a full 40 minutes and executed well."

Trailing early, the Student Princes worked to keep the game close in the first half. A pair of Bennie free throws tied the game at 36 with 3:26 before the break. With 2:19 until halftime, Ryan Bruns -- the reigning USBWA National Player of the Week -- buried a triple to put ONU up 41-38. The Polar Bears took a 43-40 lead into halftime.

Senior captain James Hanley sparked the Heidelberg offense with a 3-pointer with 9:50 to play. Hanley's shot gave the Berg a 65-63 lead -- its first lead since the first half.

Trailing by two with 6:38 remaining, Hanley drained another trey to put the visitors back on top.

With 5:27 left, a three off the hand of Moxley pushed HU to a 73-69 advantage. ONU worked to tie the game at 73, but jumpers from Bennie and Prewitt helped the Berg regain the lead.

Nate Burger's layup cut the Heidelberg lead to 81-80 with 34 seconds to play. Moxley -- a senior -- found Prewitt who buried the three with nine seconds to play. It was Prewitt's lone triple of the game.

The Berg committed just nine turnovers in the game and shot 86% from the foul line.

Heidelberg improves to 7-9, 3-6 in conference play. Ohio Northern slips to 11-5, 6-3 in the OAC.

"We played hard, smart, and together," said Bucheit. "Our seniors led us tonight and trusted their teammates."

The Berg returns home Saturday to begin the second half of the OAC schedule. HU will host Wilmington College (6-9, 2-7 OAC) for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
