MBB: Cards storm past Heidelberg

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Days after upsetting a ranked opponent, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell to Otterbein University, 78-69. The Student Princes struggled from long range, hitting on just 5-of-20 shots from beyond the arc.

Heidelberg dropped to 8-11, 4-8 in the OAC. The Cardinals picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-18, 1-11.

Kiere Bennie had 18 points to lead all scorers. Prince Benson and James Hanley each added 10 points in the loss.

The Berg built a five-point lead on multiple occasions in the first half, including a 34-29 advantage on a Bailey Croft layup. Four missed 3-pointers and three turnovers by the Student Princes allowed the hosts to sprint into the locker room on a 17-0 run, up 46-34.

The Student Princes began to close the deficit in the second half. Down 52-38 with 16:13 remaining, HU went on a 15-2 run over a seven-minute span that brought them to within one and prompted a Cardinal timeout.

After the rest, Otterbein scored the next six points to regain control. With less than two minutes to play, the Cardinals built a 10-point lead.

Heidelberg closed to within six, but were unable to get any closer. Otterbein emerged with a 78-69 victory, their first of the season. The Cards had four players in double figures.

The Student Princes close out January with a home game on Wednesday. Capital (9-10, 5-7) visits Seiberling Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. tip. The Crusaders defeated Heidelberg, 85-75, earlier this season.
