MBB: After rocky start, Berg defeats Adrian

ANGOLA, Indiana -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team shook off a slow start, defeating Adrian College in overtime in the opening game of Trine University's St. Andrews Products Classic. Behind 20-point performances by Myron Prewitt and Curt Jacobs, the Student Princes beat the Bulldogs, 82-73.

Having scored a combined 80 points in his past two games, Prewitt finished with 24 points -- 10 of which came in overtime. He tallied 12 rebounds, notching his seventh double-double of the season.

Jacobs, a freshman, had a career-high 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

Heidelberg improved to 3-5 on the season and leads the all-time series with Adrian, 10-4.

Adrian sprinted out of the gate -- taking a 16-3 lead in the first 3:30 of play. Heidelberg righted the ship midway through the half, cutting into a 21-9 deficit with a 10-0 run. After the Bulldogs' lead once again bloomed out to eight, HU responded with another spirited run. With a 3-pointer, Jacobs capped a 9-0 run that put his team up 30-29.

The Bulldogs, however, scraped their way back to a big lead by outscoring Heidelberg 11-0 over the final four minutes of the half.

Trailing 40-30 at halftime, 3-pointers by Jimmy Hanley, Prewitt and Alex Arellano helped Heidelberg cut into the Adrian advantage.

Down 64-63 with just over two minutes left, Jacobs knocked down a trey on a feed from Josh Dixon. Adrian tied the game at 66 on their next possession. Both teams were unable to score on their next three possessions, sending the game to overtime.

In the OT, Prewitt was 3-of-4 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. Combined with three free throws by Hanley and a 3-pointer from Dylan Woods, the Tricolor outscored Adrian 16-7 in the period.

Heidelberg's bench outscored the Adrian reserves 29-3.

"It was a great team effort tonight … Everyone had a hand in this win," said Head Coach Andy Bucheit, whose team was won two straight after a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds last Saturday at Mount Union. "There were a lot of big plays that won't show up in the box score."

Arellano finished with 10 rebounds as the Student Princes won the battle on the glass, 50-45.

Adrian (3-5) was led by a 26-point night by Jordan Harris.

Heidelberg will face Trine on Saturday.  Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
