Shaun Gunnell hired to lead golf, assist women's hoops

TIFFIN -- In time for the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, Shaun Gunnell has been named to a dual appointment at Heidelberg University. Gunnell will be the head men's and women's golf coach and assistant women's basketball coach.

Kiki Lorann, a member of the university groundscrew, will assist Gunnell in coaching the golf teams. Lorann, who golfed collegiately at the University of Findlay, was the NAIA National Champion in 1998. She was inducted to the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. While attending Mohawk High School, she was the medalist at the first-ever OHSAA Girl's Golf Tournament in 1993.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to continue my coaching career at Heidelberg University," said Gunnell, who spent four years as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program at the University of Rio Grande. "I look forward to helping the student-athletes on these three teams reach their potential in the classroom and in competition."

Gunnell takes the reins of a golf program which grew significantly under the direction of former head coach Dan Hartsel, who resigned in July.

"Our golf teams are poised to climb the standings in the conference," said Athletic Director Matt Palm. "I'm excited to see the direction that Shaun and Kiki take the programs."

As an assistant coach at Rio Grande, Gunnell helped the Red Storm women's basketball team compile an 81-43 record over his four-year tenure. During that time, he coached four Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Americans. At Heidelberg, he will work in tandem with Head Coach Morgan Harrigan and Graduate Assistant Nicole Payne.

"Being able to bring in a coach with Shaun's experience is great," said Harrigan, entering her fifth year at the helm. "I think he will really fit in well with our program."

Gunnell is a graduate of Rio Grande, where he was a standout with the men's basketball and track & field programs. He earned all-conference accolades in both sports.

"I am excited to get started and to become part of the Heidelberg community," said Gunnell. In March, he was named to the WBCA's Thirty Under 30 list. The list highlights the top up-and-coming coaches in all levels of women's basketball.

Gunnell's hiring comes as the Athletic Department is preparing to unveil the renovations of Seiberling Gymnasium, scheduled for August 18.
