Late rally not enough for MLAX

TIFFIN -- A first quarter deficit would be too much for the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team, as it fell to Wilmington College, 13-7, Saturday afternoon. After giving up five goals in the first quarter, HU could not find its momentum until late in the game.

The Quakers pick up their first OAC victory of the season, as they improve to 3-10, 1-5 OAC> Heidelberg falls to 3-9, 0-4.

After Wilmington jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first six minutes of action, Matt Wernerspach ended the shutout with a goal at the 1:57 mark of the first.

Patrick McCarthy scored Heidelberg's lone goal of the second quarter as the Quakers took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

Wernerspach struck first in the third quarter with a goal at 8:33. Undaunted, Wilmington added three more before the period ended.

HU outscored their opponent in the fourth, 4-2 -- but the rally was too little, too late. Selfridge scored three of the four Student Prince goals in the period, including a pair 20 seconds apart. Wernerspach tallied his third of the game with 2:14 to play.

Wilmington added a needless garbage-time goal with two seconds left to play to get to the final 13-7 margin.

Selfridge has 29 goals on the season while Wernerspach has 26.

Goalie Max Rennillo made 19 saves for HU. Paul Koerbel made 22 saves for the Quakers.

Freshman Ryan Sinnema picked up eight ground balls while Chris Storrs picked up six.

With his four caused turnovers, Sinnema extends his league-leading season total to 38.

Wilmington was 16-22 in faceoffs on the afternoon. They were led offensively by four-goal efforts by Jhordan Lang and Reid Delaney.

The Student Princes host Baldwin Wallace (9-2, 4-1) on Wednesday, a rescheduled match from Apr. 5. First face off is slated for 7 p.m.
