  • Wernerspach and Weaver tally goals

TIFFIN -- In the OAC opener for both schools, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team fell to Otterbein University, 12-2. The Cardinals controlled the pace of play and levied 60 shots at the Heidelberg net.

The Student Princes dropped to 5-3, 0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals improved to 3-5, 1-0.

The Cardinals methodically scored four times in both the first and second quarter, taking an 8-0 into halftime.

Both Heidelberg goals came within a 45-second span early in the second half. Liam Weaver got Heidelberg on the board with an unassisted goal at the 12:24 mark. Weaver drove down the right side, cut back to the center and backhanded the ball past the Otterbein goalkeeper for his 15th goal of the year.

With 11:24 left in the third, Matt Wernerspach tallied his 24th goal of the year, running down the left flank and beating the keeper to the near side.

In goal, freshman Alex Bruder (5-3) stopped 15 shots. Barry Middleton was credited with two caused turnovers.

The Student Princes return to action next Saturday -- on the road at Muskingum University. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
