WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Showing no lingering effects from Wednesday night's overtime heartbreak, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team dismantled conference foe Wilmington, 16-6. The Student Princes built a 9-0 lead by halftime and cruised to victory.
With the win, Heidelberg improved to 5-5 overall, 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Quakers slipped to 2-6, 0-2.
A mere 64 seconds into the game, Hodson finished a counterattack by bouncing a shot past the Wilmington goalkeeper. Exactly five minutes later, McCarthy scored his first. Weaver closed the first quarter with goals two minutes apart.
Weaver's third in a row came 46 seconds into the second quarter. McCarthy, Weaver, Bruder and Hodson would all score before intermission.
Seconds after Weaver opened the scoring in the third with a nifty underhanded shot, the hosts got on the board with a goal by Mike Smith. Helped by goals from McCarthy and Weaver, The Berg led 12-3 after three.
Though the Quakers tightened the contest by scoring the first three goals of the fourth, trimming the HU lead to six, Heidelberg closed the game on a 4-0 run. The run was ignited by a critical goal by Bruder which came 13 seconds after the final goal by Wilmington -- which seemed to deflate the Quaker sails. The 4-0 run featured two goals by Bruder and Weaver.
Goalkeeper Eli Allen played all 60 minutes in the crease, stopping five shots.
McCarthy registered three assists on the day.
With their second OAC win of the season, Heidelberg has already set a new program best for conference wins in a season.
The Student Princes return to action on Wednesday, when they will visit Ohio Northern University (8-1, 2-0) for a 7 p.m. matchup.
