Samaniego & Koczak power men's soccer to 5-1 victory

TIFFIN – Three goals in a seven minute span in the first half propelled the Heidelberg University men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Muskingum on Senior Day at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.

After ceding an early goal to Muskingum's Christopher Heine, Heidelberg's Chris Koczak knocked in a rebound off a shot from Ryan Homoki.

Less than two minutes later Heidelberg (10-5, 4-3 OAC) scored again. Hamid Shariff served a ball into the penalty area that Nico Samaniego redirected into the net with his head.

Four minutes later, Homoki assisted on the third Heidelberg goal, off the foot of Hamid Shariff.

The Student Princes kept their foot on the gas as Samaniego beat three defenders and ripped a shot past the Muskie goalkeeper, Mathais Buchner.

At the break, Muskingum (5-11-1, 0-6-1 OAC) replaced Buchner with Will Hess. Hess had four saves, but did allow Koczak to score again. Koczak headed in a ball that was played off of Kyle Simpson and Kurt Wilhelm. Koczak has 11 goals on the season.

Muskingum mustered six shots.

With two games left in the regular season, Ohio Northern and John Carroll are tied for first place with a 6-1 record. Heidelberg is one of four teams at 4-3. The top six teams qualify for the postseason tournament.

Heidelberg hosts John Carroll on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Mayer Field.
