2nd half push by Grove City sinks men's soccer

TIFFIN - It looked promising early for the Heidelberg University men's soccer team, but opportunity after opportunity did not result in a goal for the Student Princes in the 1st half.  Grove City's halftime adjustments paid off as they controlled possession in the 2nd, scoring twice and holding a strong defensive line to keep the 'Berg from mounting a comeback.

The Student Princes opened quickly in the first half, maintaining posession for the majority of the period.  They out-shot the Wolverines 12-4, but they weren't able to break through for a goal, and the game went into halftime in a scoreless tie.

Grove City seemed to take control of the match early in the 2nd period, and it didn't take them long to score as sophomore Frank Hueber found the back of the net off of a corner kick in the 52nd minute.

The Wolverines continued their posessions through the half and broke through the defense again in the 74th when Stephen Betteridge got behind the defense and beat the keeper to give Grove City a two goal advantage that they would not relinquish.

Kyle Simpson led the Student Prince offense with 6 shots in the match while Hamid Shariff tallied 3.  Matthew Stevens picked up 6 saves in goal.

The Student Princes out-shot Grove City 19-14 on the match but were out-shot 10-7 in the second half when the scoring occurred.

Heidelberg fell to 3-3-2 with the defeat but will have a quick turnaround with a match Tuesday, September 23rd against Oberlin.  That road game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
