TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team trudged through a mud-soaked 90 minutes before falling to John Carroll University 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The contest started off strong with all three goals scored within six minutes at the end of the first half.
Heidelberg (6-5-3) spent much of the first half defending in their third of the field. In the 39th minute JCU's Brian Potocnik broke through to find Justin Miller for his third goal of the season.
Three minutes later the pair found each other again as Potocnik crossed the ball in from the right to Miller, who finished with a header.
Following a Blue Streak foul just two minutes later, the Student Princes' Andres Isea curled a free kick into the penalty area and found a slashing Alexis Mendoza, who headed the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Both JCU and Heidelberg tallied five shots a piece in the second half, but the Tricolor controlled play throughout much of the period. Goalkeepers Matthew Stevens (Berg) and Derek Jenkins (JCU) as well as their defense worked hard to keep the ball out of their respective nets.
The Berg will take on Mount Union this Saturday at Hidden Valley. Kick off in Tiffin is scheduled for 2 p.m.
