UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a rematch of last year's OAC championship match, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team was unable to get their offense going as they fell 3-0 to John Carroll. The Student Prince defense held the match scoreless at the break, but JCU netted a trio of goals in the second half to sink the Berg.
JCU out-shot the Berg 19-6 in the match, including a 10-2 edge in the second half. Despite only registering six shots, five were on goal for the Student Princes.
Alex Archambeau made seven saves in goal for Heidelberg.
John Carroll has the first scoring opportunity in the match when a shot that was rocketed on goal was saved by Archambeau in the second minute of play.
Heidelberg countered pretty quickly and Chris Koczak was able to get a head on a ball played into the box, but JCU made the save as the match remained scoreless less than five minutes in.
In the 17th minute, Koczak found some space past the JCU defense and sent a hard shot towards the goal, but it sailed just to the right of the post.
After a yellow card was issued to Kyle Simpson in the 24th minute, the Blue Streaks played a dangerous ball into the box that was shot on goal, but Archambeau made another nice save to keep the match scoreless.
Archambeau continued to put forth a solid effort in the 29th minute when a shot sent him diving to his right to make another impressive save.
Arguably Heidelberg's best chance of the half came in the 43rd minute. Shortly after a free kick for the Berg, a ball was loose in the box and shot by Koczak, but his shot was covered up by the keeper. That would be the last big threat of the half as they entered the break scoreless.
JCU held a 9-4 advantage in shots at halftime but just a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
In the 50th minute, JCU played a ball across the face of goal, but the shot went just wide as the Student Princes avoided another great chance by the Blue Streaks.
The ferocious attack for John Carroll paid off shortly thereafter as a header goal put them ahead 1-0 in the 51st minute.
Heidelberg had a tough time finding any good chances of their own in the second half, as that one goal lead held up until the 77th minute, when JCU scored on another header to make the score 2-0.
That deficit grew to three less than two minutes later when the Blue Streaks scored on a breakaway to all but seal the match. The Student Princes were unable to battle back, as they fell by a final score of 3-0.
The Student Princes will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Alliance to take on Mount Union. That OAC match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
