Men's soccer falls at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match with Thomas More College 2-0. HU fired 12 shots in the contest, but could not find the back of the net. The loss brings the Berg's record to 1-4 while the Saints improve to 4-1.

The Saints scored their first goal in the 81st minute. Suli Kayed snuck through the Heidelberg defense and with one touch launched a shot on goal. Jake Kress made the impressive initial save, but the rebound deflected right into the chest of Brian Runyon. As Kress was still on the ground from the diving stop, Runyon chested it and placed a chip shot over Kress and into the net.

With under five minutes to play, the Berg was looking for the equalizer. Porus Shroff sent a shot on goal that was saved by Jeff Paulin, but the rebound trickled towards the goal line. A Thomas More defender cleared the ball just before it crossed the line, saving a potential HU goal.

Thomas More sealed the victory with a goal in the final minute. Ethan Smith had a breakaway down the right side, and sent the ball past a diving Kress.

Thomas More appeared to score in the 60th minute when a bouncing ball in the box was headed into the net. The goal was waved off due to the Saints being whistled for offsides.

Kress made three saves in the match. TMC keeper Paulin had four saves in the clean sheet.

Head coach Pat Svihlik on the game: "I'm proud of the players and the coaches on this team ... Both teams were strong today defensively ... Thomas More had their chances and we had ours ... They put theirs away and we didn't."

Svihlik on moving forward: "It's not good enough to come close ... We need to be better ... I know with a couple adjustments we'll get it sorted out."

HU returns to the pitch at Hidden Valley for a matchup with Grove City College. Kickoff on September 17th is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
