Men's soccer shuts out W&J 3-0

TIFFIN -- Led by Rodrigo Meza's two goals, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team blanked Washington & Jefferson College 3-0 Saturday afternoon. HU improves to 2-5 while the Presidents fall to 3-3-1.

The Berg first got on the board when W&J looked to clear the ball out of their own box. The attempted clear was intercepted by Meza. Meza beat a defender and scored in the lower 90 for his first goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Meza went back to work. Kyle Morton played a beautiful through ball that landed at the feet of Meza. Meza took two touches and launched a shot from 15 yards out. The ball was just over the outstretched arms of W&J keeper Nick Stasko -- pushing the Berg's lead to 2-0 at the half.

HU added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute thanks to Joseph Tallarico -- his second goal in as many matches. Alexis Mendoza sent a ball inside the 6 yard box across the goal and was tapped in by Tallarico.

The Student Princes outshot W&J 18-3. The Berg held the Presidents to one shot in the entire second half.

Meza and Mendoza each tallied four shots on the afternoon.

Jake Kress made one save in the match.

Head coach Pat Svihlik on Meza's two goals: "It was good to get not just one, but two before the half ... Especially from Rodrigo, he had an excellent week of training."

Svihlik on Tallarico: "He brings such a tremendous presence with his energy and his intensity ... His goal was well deserved."

Svihlik on looking ahead: "Today was fun ... We're ready to get back to work for a tough match on Tuesday."

Heidelberg travels to Denison on Tuesday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
