Meza's golden goal lifts men's soccer

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Playing late into the Granville night, Rodrigo Meza's golden goal in the first overtime lifted the Heidelberg University men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 triumph at Denison University on Tuesday.

The Student Princes ran their winning streak to two games and improved to 3-5 on the season. The Big Red fell to 3-4-2.

A scoreless first half saw both sides with several goal scoring opportunities. Jake Kress, donning a mask to protect an injury, made a save diving to his right midway through the period.

In the 70th minute, Denison's Luis Zamora nearly put the Big Red on the board with a header that hit the left post on a cross from the right wing.

Still scoreless, the game advanced to overtime. In the final 90 seconds of the first extra period, Joseph Tallarico gained possession in the middle third of the field and laid it ahead to the right for Kiki Alvarado. Alvarado one-touched it further to the right wing where Kyle Diaz crossed it into the six. Streaking down the left flank, the freshman Meza won the race to the service and battered into the back of the net for the golden goal.

Meza has three goals in the last two games for Heidelberg -- both Tricolor victories.

Kress picked up his second straight shutout. He made five saves.

First-year head coach Pat Svihlik on the win: "Tonight was a very good team performance ... I'm so proud of my guys ... From upperclassmen to first years, each and every one of the them played to the best of their ability and executed the game plan."

Svihlik on prepping for OAC play:  "We will enjoy this win tonight, but we will get ready for OAC play starting tomorrow."

Heidelberg opens up OAC action with a match against Muskingum (3-5-1) on Homecoming. The match, slated for a 1 p.m. start, will take place at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
