TIFFIN -- It was a span of 50 seconds that proved to be the difference for the Heidelberg University men's soccer team. Junior Joseph Tallarico scored twice in the span to lead the team to a 2-0 win over Thiel College on Saturday afternoon.
The Berg improves to a spotless 6-0 on the season. The Tomcats fall to 3-5.
HU had plenty of opportunities in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Tallarico changed the pace of the game in the second half, providing the Student Princes with the momentum needed.
A long kick from Jake Kress bounced well into the TC half and found the feet of Tallarico. Tallarico took a touch and rifled the shot into the lower third. It was the junior's fourth goal of the season.
Less than a minute later, Rodrigo Meza -- who had Thursday's game winner -- fed a ball into the box to Tallarico. Tallarico one-touched a strike into the net for his second goal of the game.
The Student Prince defense held tough for the duration of the match, with Kress making just one save. It was his fifth clean sheet of the season. Thiel's Christian Conrad made 13 saves in the match.
HU outshot Thiel, 36-3. Heidelberg took 11 corner kicks compared to Thiel's 1.
"Thiel was very organized and compact, they did a good job against us," said head coach Pat Svihlik. "I like how we never lost our focus and our team defense stepped up and played well today."
Heidelberg hosts Manchester on Tuesday evening for a matchup with Manchester University. Kickoff at Hoernemann Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
